Surname or Lastname
English (Yorkshire)
English (Yorkshire) : habitational name from places so named, of which there is one West Yorkshire and another in Suffolk, both probably deriving their name from an Old English personal name Heppa + worð ‘enclosure’. The surname is still found mainly in Yorkshire, so it seems that the first place is the more likely source of the surname.
Surname or Lastname
English
English : topographic name from Middle English stille ‘calm’, ‘quiet’, + welle ‘spring’, ‘stream’, or possibly a habitational name from a minor place, now lost, of which the first element may have been Old English stigel, stigol ‘stile’, ‘steep place’.
Surname or Lastname
English
English : habitational name from a place in Devon, recorded in Domesday Book as Loba, apparently a topographical term meaning perhaps ‘lump’, ‘hill’, the village being situated at the bottom of a hill. There is also a place of the same name in Oxfordshire (recorded in 1208 as Lobbe), but the historical and contemporary distribution of the surname (which is still largely restricted to Devon), makes it unlikely that it ever derived from this place, or from Middle English, Old English lobbe ‘spider’.
Surname or Lastname
English and German (Stillmann)
English and German (Stillmann) : variant of Still.Jewish (Ashkenazic) : nickname or ornamental name, from German still ‘calm’, ‘quiet’ + Mann ‘man’ (Yiddish shtil + man).
Surname or Lastname
English and Scottish
English and Scottish : topographic name for someone who lived near a tumulus, mound or hill, Middle English lowe, from Old English hlÄw (see Law 2).Scottish and English : nickname for a short man, from Middle English lah, lowe (Old Norse lágr; the word was adopted first into the northern dialects of Middle English, where Scandinavian influence was strong, and then spread south, with regular alteration of the vowel quality).English and Scottish (of Norman origin) : nickname for a violent or dangerous person, from Anglo-Norman French lou, leu ‘wolf’ (Latin lupus). Wolves were relatively common in Britain at the time when most surnames were formed, as there still existed large tracts of uncleared forest.Scottish : from a pet form of Lawrence. Compare Lowry 1.Americanized spelling of Jewish Lowe.
Surname or Lastname
English
English : variant of Eastes, still pronounced today as two syllables, as it was in medieval times. This name was brought to New England by Matthew (1645–1723) and Richard (born 1647) Estes, sons of Robert and Dorothy Estes of Dover, England. Probably unconnected is the founder of the VA and TN family of this name, Benjamin Estes (born 1736 in VA; died 1811 in TN).
Surname or Lastname
English
English : from the popular medieval personal name Hudde, which is of complex origin. It is usually explained as a pet form of Hugh, but there was a pre-existing Old English personal name, Hūda, underlying place names such as Huddington, Worcestershire. This personal name may well still have been in use at the time of the Norman Conquest. If so, it was absorbed by the Norman Hugh and its many diminutives. Reaney adduces evidence that Hudde was also regarded as a pet form of Richard.German : from a short form of a Germanic compound personal name formed with hut ‘guard’ as the first element.Variant spelling of German Hütt (see Huett).Jewish (Ashkenazic) : metonymic occupational name from Yiddish hut, German Hut ‘hat’ (see Huth).
Surname or Lastname
English (Northumberland and Durham)
English (Northumberland and Durham) : probably a topographic name or a habitational name from a lost or unidentified place, most likely in northeastern England, where the name is still most frequent.
Surname or Lastname
English
English : habitational name from any of the various places so called. Most, for example those in Oxfordshire, Suffolk, and Warwickshire, are named with Old English héan (the weak dative case of hēah ‘high’, originally used after a preposition and article) + Old English lēah ‘wood’, ‘clearing’. Others, for example one near Ludlow in Shropshire, have as their first element Old English henn ‘hen’, ‘wild bird’. Others still, for example those in Somerset and Surrey, are ambiguous between the two possibilities. In Ireland, Henley is used for Hennelly, and sometimes for Hanley.Possibly an Americanized spelling of German Henle.
Surname or Lastname
English
English : habitational name from places in Devon and Cheshire, named in Old English as ‘common wood or clearing’, from (ge)mǣne ‘common’, ‘shared’ + lēah ‘woodland clearing’. The surname is still chiefly found in the regions around these villages.English : nickname from Middle English mannly ‘manly’, ‘virile’, ‘brave’ (Old English mannlīc, originally ‘man-like’).Irish (County Cork) : Anglicized form of Ó Máinle (and often pronounced Mauly), of unexplained origin. Compare Malley.Irish (Connacht and Donegal) : shortened Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Maonghaile ‘descendant of Maonghal’, a personal name derived from words meaning ‘wealth’ and ‘valor’.
Surname or Lastname
English
English : from a Germanic personal name composed of the elements eber ‘wild boar’ + hard ‘brave’, ‘hardy’, ‘strong’. The surname was at first found mainly in East Anglia (still one of the principal locations of the variant Everett), which was an area of heavy Norman and Breton settlement after the Conquest. This suggests that the personal name may be of Continental (Norman) origin, but it is also possible that it swallowed up an unattested Old English cognate, Eoforheard.
Surname or Lastname
English
English : habitational name from a village in Northumbria, named from Old English ÆlfheringahÄm ‘homestead (Old English hÄm) of the people of Ælfhere’; the t was inserted for the sake of euphony after the name had been collapsed in pronunciation. The surname is still largely restricted to the Newcastle area.
Surname or Lastname
English
English : from Old French Gascogne ‘Gascony’, hence a regional name. The name of the region derives from that of the Basques, who are found close by and formerly extended into this region as well; they are first named in Roman sources as VascÅnes, but the original meaning of the name, derived from a root eusk- in the non-Indo-European language that they still speak today, is completely obscure. By the Middle Ages the Basques had been displaced from most of Gascony by speakers of Gascon (a dialect of Occitan, related to French), who were proverbial for their boastfulness. In the 11th century Gascony united with Aquitaine and was thus held by England between 1154 and 1453. See Gascon.

English : habitational name from Lowthorpe in East Yorkshire, named with the Old Norse personal name Logi or Lági + þorp ‘outlying farmstead’In 1634 the name was brought to North America by the Rev. John Lathrop (b. 1584 in Etton, Yorkshire, England), a Puritan preacher fleeing religious persecution. He arrived at Plymouth Colony and lived in Scituate, MA until 1639, then moved to Barnstable MA, where his Bible can still be seen.

English
English : from a Middle English personal name Dunstan, composed of Old English dunn ‘dark’, ‘brown’ + stÄn ‘stone’. This name was borne by a 10th-century archbishop of Canterbury who was later canonized.English : habitational name from Dunstone in Devon, named from Old English DunstÄnestÅ«n ‘settlement of Dunstan’ (as in 1). The surname is still chiefly common in Devon, but there are places in other parts of the country with similar names but different etymologies (e.g. Dunstan in Northumbria, Dunston in Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Staffordshire, and Derbyshire), which may possibly have contributed to the surname.Scottish : partly perhaps the same as 1, but there is a place named Dunstane in Roxburghshire, which may also be a source of the surname.

English
English : topographic name for someone who lived on a heath, from Middle English hÅth ‘heath’, Old English hÄð, a byform of hǣð (see Heath). This form was restricted in the Middle Ages to southeastern England, and the surname is still largely confined to Kent and Sussex. In some cases it may be a habitational name from the village of Hoath in Kent, which is named with this word.
