ABBS VALLEY
n.
The French word answering to the English abbot, the head of an abbey; but commonly a title of respect given in France to every one vested with the ecclesiastical habit or dress.
n.
Among weavers, yarn for the warp. Hence, abb wool is wool for the abb.
n.
An abbes or spiritual mother.
v. t.
To cleanse, as open drains which are entered by the tide, by stirring up the sediment when the tide ebbs.
n.
Same as Ambs-ace.
n.
A tract of low ground, or of land between hills; a valley.
n.
The space inclosed between ranges of hills or mountains; the strip of land at the bottom of the depressions intersecting a country, including usually the bed of a stream, with frequently broad alluvial plains on one or both sides of the stream. Also used figuratively.
n.
Father; religious superior; -- in the Syriac, Coptic, and Ethiopic churches, a title given to the bishops, and by the bishops to the patriarch.
n.
Ambs-ace.
n. pl.
A sect of dissenters from the ecclesiastical system of the Roman Catholic Church, who in the 13th century were driven by persecution to the valleys of Piedmont, where the sect survives. They profess substantially Protestant principles.
prep.
The alternate rising and falling of the waters of the ocean, and of bays, rivers, etc., connected therewith. The tide ebbs and flows twice in each lunar day, or the space of a little more than twenty-four hours. It is occasioned by the attraction of the sun and moon (the influence of the latter being three times that of the former), acting unequally on the waters in different parts of the earth, thus disturbing their equilibrium. A high tide upon one side of the earth is accompanied by a high tide upon the opposite side. Hence, when the sun and moon are in conjunction or opposition, as at new moon and full moon, their action is such as to produce a greater than the usual tide, called the spring tide, as represented in the cut. When the moon is in the first or third quarter, the sun's attraction in part counteracts the effect of the moon's attraction, thus producing under the moon a smaller tide than usual, called the neap tide.
n.
A small ornamental piece of embroidery worn on albs and some other ecclesiastical vestments.
pl.
of Valley
n.
The depression formed by the meeting of two slopes on a flat roof.
n.
Double aces, the lowest throw of all at dice. Hence: Bad luck; anything of no account or value.
n. pl.
