6 Tasty Foods That Can Help Protect Your Skin From Cancer

Like your eyes are the window to your soul, your skin is a window to your general health. Your skin constantly communicates with your digestive system through the gut-brain-skin axis, which means good skin health may indicate the balance of good and bad bacteria in your gut.

Foods you eat regularly affect the condition and appearance of your skin, so it’s no surprise that some foods can help lower the risk of skin cancer. Scientists have found that dietary antioxidants can help prevent DNA damage and cancerous growths that stem from UV radiation. Keep reading to find out what foods can boost your skin health and help protect you from skin cancer.

1. Dark leafy greens

A plant-based Mediterranean diet has been proven to protect you from skin cancer. Veggies are packed with antioxidants, including vitamins C and A. Antioxidants are known to protect skin against skin damage and help skin repair. These antioxidants work by preventing free-radical-mediated DNA damage and malignant tumors caused by UV radiation.

2. Nuts

Nuts are a good option as they are rich in antioxidants as well. Almonds contain large amounts of vitamin E (one of the most crucial antioxidants in the skin). This helps prevent damage provoked by free radicals, improves your skin’s ability to act as a protective barrier and absorb energy from UV light, and protects sebum against inflammatory damage.

Brazil nuts are another good choice, as they are high in a mineral called selenium. Selenium supplements have been shown to lower the mortality rate from skin cancer, that’s why eating more foods high in selenium like Brazil nuts might be beneficial.

3. Green tea

Green tea has anti-cancerous effects. That’s because this popular drink is rich in polyphenols, flavonoids, and catechins that help repair damaged skin and restore its elasticity. If it’s too warm for hot tea, try steeping your own cold tea and drinking it over ice.

4. Turmeric

Turmeric is another cancer-fighting food that possesses anti-inflammatory properties. That’s because the spice contains active compounds called curcuminoids that possess many cell-protective effects.

According to a study from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, curcumin blocks a biological pathway required for melanoma to develop. Plus, turmeric can help protect from inflammatory conditions, like cancer.

5. Fruits

Colorful fruits have antioxidants that can also help fight skin cancer. Consider adding more pomegranates, strawberries, grapes, and cherries to your diet. Watermelon is also high in lycopene, while cantaloupe and mangoes have beta-carotene.

However, it’s essential to get antioxidants from the whole fruit rather than juice. What’s more, scientists suggest that there is a connection between citrus juice and certain skin cancers. A recent study has shown that frequent consumption of citrus fruit juice might raise the risk of melanoma, but more research still needs to be done.

Vitamin C helps protect the skin, so eating more whole citrus fruits instead of juice might be a better option.

6. Oats

If you like eating bagels, toast, croissants, muffins, and other carb-loaded foods on your breakfast, it’s time to make some dietary changes. These foods have a high glycemic index, meaning they’re quickly digested and turned into blood glucose. Foods with a high glycemic index tend to negatively impact the skin.

They encourage the production of an insulin-like hormone called IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1) that works to reproduce and regenerate cells.

However, if you have high levels of this hormone, it can work against you. High IGF-1 levels can promote overall inflammation and contribute to certain conditions, including cancer and various skin disorders. Choose steel-cut oats. They have a low glycemic index and a high fiber content. In fact, dietary fiber has been shown to help treat IBS and improve digestive health which, in turn, positively influences skin health. Plus, other studies have also found that whole grains like oats have cancer-fighting effects.
